Stewart, Lester Franklin "Frank", III

Born on September 5, 1946 in Galveston, TX and passed away on March 1, 2016.

Frank was a loving and caring father and husband and if you were lucky enough to know him you would have a hard time finding a better friend.

Frank grew up in the piney woods of East Texas. After graduating high school at the top of his class, he obtained multiple college degrees, including Stephen F. Austin State College (BA), St. Mary’s University San Antonio (MA) and the University of Southern California on a Danforth Fellowship (MA). He met his first wife, Donna Harkins, while studying at SFA and they married in 1966, having two daughters – Shannon and Erin. In between stints in college Frank enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country honorably during the Vietnam War.

Frank followed his creative heart while also working to support his family, primarily in the Information Technology field. He played drums and harmonica in a rockabilly band, wrote several screen plays, a novel, wrote as a columnist for newspapers and drew cartoons for same. He also had a passion for basketball, which he played frequently as well as refereed high school and college games.

After learning of his Cherokee heritage, Frank devoted much of his time researching their history and his own, writing and publishing a historical novel about the Trail of Tears, learned to speak Cherokee and for the past several years he read the names of Cherokee veterans who gave their lives in WWII as part of the Texas State Fair Native American recognition ceremony.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents and Gill, his wife of 20 years. He is survived by his daughters, Shannon Uhr, Erin Boyd and adopted daughter Denise Bryant, granddaughter Taryn and grandson River, along with his wife Rebecca Stewart and siblings Mary Sieffert, Bill Stewart and Herb VanGlahn.
